Garage Sale season is starting and I love having a garage sale and going to them. I’be been to countless garage sales and have seen the good and the bad. If you plan on having one this year follow these garage sale tips to make money. Happy selling!
Last year, we didn’t have a large garage sale, but by using these tips we made a nice profit. I was so excited to make enough to purchase my apron (farmhouse) sink and to have extra cash for summer fun. I’m hoping for the same results this year and I have even more for this year.
Garage Sale Tips to Make Money
Have a Garage Sale Area in Your Home
Thought the year, we collect items in the basement and put them in boxes for the garage sale. As I decorate for each season I put items I no longer use into the boxes and do the same with the kids stuff as they grow and change. It’s a great way to have a stock pile for the garage sale.
Use Social Media
Yes this will bring in great traffic to your sale. Post in your local Facebook groups in your area for garage sales, items for sale, and kid items.
Newspaper Ads
Social Media is great, but many people who love garage sales don’t use social media and use newspaper ads. The more advertisement you have, the better your sale will be.
Take Advantage of Village/Town Wide Garage Sales or Street Sales
This will bring more people to your sale and people love multiple garage sales in a close area. My village does a village wide garage sale every year and it works out great.
Put Price Tags on Everything
People don’t like to ask prices so make sure prices are clearly labeled.
Sort the Items
Don’t just throw the stuff out on the tables, make sure their is a clear order of items and sort like with like. Kids stuff, home decor, kitchen, tools, etc. That way if someone is interested in kitchen stuff, they head right to the kitchen area and are likely to purchase more.
Place Big Ticket Items Out Front and Viewable from the Road
This is really important and will draw people into the sale. We have all been driving, seen something that caught are eye and ended up at a garage sale.
Put Everything you Can on Tables
People are more likely to buy things that are easy to see and touch. Stuffed Animals, Books, DVDs, CDs are great for boxes, but try to put everything else on tables.
Start your Garage Sale Early in the Morning
I got the best traffic in the morning as soon as I opened. The afternoon was pretty quiet, but on garage sale day the early bird gets the worm.
Move Items that are Not for Sale
Sometimes people will try to buy anything so if you have items in the garage or close to the sale, just move them for the day so you don’t have to say “not for sale.”
Have a Plan for After the Garage Sale
Now in a perfect world everything would sell and you would be rolling in the dough. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen. Once I know when the garage sale is, I set up a pickup with the Vietnam Veterans to take what didn’t sell. For the kid items, I usually take them to the local consignment shop or I just donate them, it’s up to you.
