I have to give credit to my husband for coming up with the idea to personalize these. He’s a smart cookie sometimes. Whenever I make a new ornament, I always try to make something the kids can hang on the tree (that won’t break). These are perfect!
If you are looking for an ornament that kids can make this is a good one. Kids love to paint and you can use stickers to decorate or personalize them, just put on your creative thinking cap.
This set of handmade ornaments are for our Christmas tree, but if I was giving them as a gift I would buy paint sticks that don’t have any writing on them. At Home Depot you can buy a pack of plain paint sticks for 98 cents, I love to make paint stick signs with them.
Let’s Create Personalized Paint Stick Christmas Ornaments
To get started, cut your paint sticks using a miter box. Cut the end of the paint stir stick with the curve off first and then cut the paint sticks in half. The ornaments are a little over 5 inches.
Once your paint sticks are ready it’s time to paint them! I’m starting with the traditional colors of Santa Red, Kelly Green, and Snow White. I did two coats on each ornament and sanded in between.
For my daughter’s wood ornament I painted it white, let it dry and then added the DecoArt Galaxy Glitter in Red Nebula. Her ornament fits her personality perfectly and I love it (she does too)!
The rustic farmhouse look is my favorite, but I wanted a little glitter too. I painted my ornament red (let it dry) then painted over it with Red Nebular too. After it dried, I gave it a good sanding so it has a rustic look and some glitter.
I let my ornaments dry over night and then it was time to personalize them. When my husband and I were talking about the ornaments, we don’t have many with our names on them so I’m creating some. My son said he wanted snowmen (they are his favorite) and my daughter asked for Cinderella.
I cut all the designs in vinyl using my Cricut Maker and added the designs with transfer paper.
To finish your DIY ornaments, add your ribbon to turn your paint stir stick into a paint stick Christmas ornament. I just used hot glue on the back. The ribbon is about 6.5 inches long on the ornaments.
