Decorating on a budget is a theme I live by and I love giving new life to something or to make something amazing again. I love to make signs and the best way to find wood is to look the night before garbage because people throw out awesome pieces. A little paint and a little love will make something new and brilliant again. Then you can share your upcycling story to everyone who comes over and comments on your decor.
The Rules:
- Upcycle an item(s) from a thrift store, resale store, or garage sale into a new piece of decor.
- There’s no monthly theme.
- There’s no budget to stick to.

I love signs and one of my favorite ways to make signs is to upcycle a wooden board that would have otherwise been thrown out. That’s how I came across this board, it was on it’s way to the trash, but instead found a new home and purpose. I am going to share how to create this easy, simple, cute, Upcycle Love Sign to decorate your home.

This fall I created my first sign for next to our outside door and I fell in love. My husband called it a “billboard sign” and teased me about it, but I didn’t care, he just doesn’t understand decorating or how much everyone loves signs. The sign made our house welcoming and gave it great curb appeal.
Valentine’s Day is coming and where I live it will most likely be cold and snowy. This Upcyle Love Sign will add color and charm to our home during the winter months and hopefully make people smile as they go by.
How to Make an Upcycle Love Sign
-
- Paint your board with white outdoor paint. I used the board as I found it
-
- Measure the board by placing the heart and figuring out the text size for the letters L, V, E. I found the foam heart at the Dollar Tree and I cut the ribbon off that would be used to hang it
-
- In Cricut Design Space, I created the text and cut the letters in Oracal 651 Glossy Permanent Red Vinyl using the font Words of Love
- Hot glue the heart in place and then add the vinyl letters to the board using transfer tape
Your Upcycle Love Sign is now ready to decorate your home. I made porch signs for Christmas (with the same outdoor vinyl) and when I put them away over a month later, the signs looked just as they did the day I decorated the porch. I am going to put this sign by our garage door, which is our most used door. The Upcycle Love Sign is perfect for adding color to the winter landscape. I hope this sign brings a smile to someones face and reminds them to spread love and kindness.
And now for more thrifty goodness!
